Open Molding
A Cost-Effective Solution in the Production of Lower Volume/Larger Structural Parts
Open molding – or hand lay-up/spray-up molding – is a cost-effective solution for lower volume/larger structural parts that still require complexity and/or a finished outside surface. The open molding method can accommodate large parts, like those commonly used in the agricultural or marine industries. Other advantages include design flexibility, low tooling/mold costs, and custom material density.
Open molding is best used in “limited edition”, or low volume, product lines as both processes require higher cycle times.
Hand Lay-Up Molding
This process consists of hand-placed fiber reinforcements that are wet set with resin. Customers can control which structural material is used, as well as how much, until ideal processing conditions are reached. While very versatile, hand lay-up parts only possess one cosmetically finished side, which can be gel-coated in a customer’s specific color choice.
Spray-Up Molding
Similar to hand lay-up molding, spray-up molding offers greater complexity and faster production because it utilizes a spray gun to deposit structural material (i.e. glass) inside the mold. These reinforcements are also wet set with resin, producing part with one cosmetically finished side.
